I'm running a mild cam in my 521 with 10.5:1 CR and aluminum heads and I haven't even tried running pump fuel. (I was told I can't, but haven't tried...I just may though).
Have you figured your Dynamic CR?
To OP, too bad your builder cant seem to get it right. I've had a similiar situation before. You really shouldnt be pinging with premium or better fuel. It may not be a rear main leak, it might be running down from the back of the intake manifold. Grab a little mirror and check next time.
@ Arctic Y hahaha Thats what should happen! Its not always so easy to get though.
Oil leak at back of intake. Not REAR main. And the flywheel and or dampener is not balanced right. Tell the builder and make him fix it or buy ya a long block Bud. Life is to short to be without your FE.
How often does he work on these type of engines has it been a while since he worked on something like this? Did he check everything an make sure everything matches up an its not mismatched parts that might be causing it. An some on here set the timing to 0 to get it right why don't he do that? An what did he say was wrong with it besides the carb & timing? Was the build on this engine a step up from stock or a mild build or what?
Arctic: I'll check back of intake tomorrow. Also, I think he did mention along the way that the rotating assembly was balanced, but not the flywheel. If it matters he's using a 360 heavy duty clutch and flywheel- claims he couldn't easily locate 390 parts.
Kalve: He claims to build FE's regularly. As for matching, the crank and rods were sourced from different places and refurbished. All other internals are new. It's suppose to be a mild build with the power band for towing, off idle to 2200 RPM.
There's also chattering coming from the heads. He's replaced rocker arms and says we may need different lifters because if the cam.
He didnt try to reuse the lifters did he? Cause you always replace lifters when you change cams. The cam should've come with matching springs and lifters.
The only recycled parts that weren't refurbed were the rocker arms. That was the first item he replaced, he wasn't happy with the chatter. It has a Comp cam, but I don't think they supplied the spring/lifters. He called Comp and they recommended performance lifters because of the cam, builder says he's never done that before on a build like mine- never needed to.
