i listed this topic before in another forum. i've been having problems with squealing from the front-end. i know its in the belt or the pulleys. i just put on a new belt for the third or fourth time and it helped for awhile but it came back after four noise free days. but the squeal totally gave way to a knock like sound. no its not a lifter or a piston or the main-bearing. i listened very closely with a pal of mine and we both decided it was definately coming from the alternator, we could feel it. possibly the noises have been coming from it the whole time and just got worse with the new belt? i'm thinking the bearings are bad. i also have changed the idler-pulley in trying to solve this headache of mine. i've been told to adjust the tension but doesn't the tensioner, set from the factory, do this automatically so as not to have to adjust it?
yes, there should be a spring in the idler pully to tension the spring. You can replace bearings in and alt, but id run down to orielys and buy a new one
