All the places I've looked I keep seeing the same part # for a 390 and 410. Just doesn't seem right to me given a difference of .2" in stroke. Looks like one would have a compression ratio of about 6 and the other would have about 11. Or the top of the piston on the 410 would come out of the top of the cyl. if using a 390 piston. I thought the rods are the same length...how does it compute? Or does someone have good #'s to use. Low budget 410 isn't so low anymore. It's only money!
410 Pistons were used in later model 390's to lower the compresion ration for the crappy fuel at the time. Ford must have thought it was easier than enlarging the combustion chamber. Federal mogul offers pistons for the 390 that come all the way to the top of the bore (1.759" CD as compared to 1.660" CD). If you were to use these with a 410/428 crank they would probably crash into the head, I don't know anyone that has tried it. There's only .099" diference in the piston heights, but the difference in stroke is .20". Maybe we are on to something here. I'll check my 410 short block tonight and see if there is room for another .010" of piston. That would mean alot more options for pistons in the 410. Has anybody looked into this yet?
Thru searching I've found a couple sets of pistons: Silvolite # 1139(cast) and Sterling # H304P(hypertectic) and would like to use the Sterlings. I dont have any specs to compare them to see if they will work in a 410.
The silvolite 1139 will work in a 410, it has a 1.66 pin height. The H304P has a 1.76 pin height and would crash into the head if used in a 410. If you have your heart set on the H304Ps, you might be able to mill the tops of them to make them fit. One of my engines, a 421 ( 410 060 over ) was made with TRW L2291Fs that were milled .100 on the tops to give the correct height. DF
