different 63 body styles?????
The Edsel looked very similar to a Pontiac.
The more I hear and research about Edsels the more I want one. Why does it always work like that? As far as the Uni, i own a '62 and love it, it's like a Ranchero on steroids! When introduced, jokesters said the 1958 Edsel looked like an Oldsmobile sucking a lemon. "Horsecollar" was another name jokesters called the 1958's grille.
FoMoCo planned on selling 200,000 Edsels in 1958, but only 63,100 were sold. Only 110,847 Edsels were sold from September 1958 thru November 18, 1959 when it was discontinued.
It was the wrong car at the wrong time, but during the period it was being developed in the mid 1950's, it was the right car at the right time as it was planned to fill the price gap between Ford & Mercury.
The problem was...when it was introduced, the price gap between Ford and Mercury had vanished.
The Eisenhower Recession played havoc with all vehicle sales. You Auto Buy Now was an ad slogan the automakers came up with in 1958. It didn't help much.
But how about how GM had ifs at that time, and Ford and Dodge were still running straight axles?
Or was IFS in truck in those days not considered tough enough for the work load?
We all know Ford went to I-beams, and used adds claiming that GM stuff was more suited for a car. So was that a prevailing attitude of the day? After all if you wanna trail ride, or pre-run I beams are the standard still.
