40"+? Considering a "new" set

Okay, so I have a set of 16.5-16.1 firestones on the way for my rig (also some black procomp 16x10 steelies), but they have some age on them. they'll be fine for now, but I'm getting a little overtime and I like having a backup plan. Also, I'm a fan of non-directional tires. So I'm considering a new or (if I'm lucky) used set of 40+" tires. I originally wanted a set of 42" tsl's, but ntw has almost nothing in the way of "big" swampers. Everywhere else I search (& I'm sure ntw) wants some pretty steep prices. I say steep, bc for some of the prices I find 42-44" tsl or sx at, I can just about add $20-40 and get 17/47 ltb's (I'm not particularly attached to/obsessed with sheet metal).
So having 5.13 gears, I'm dead set on 40-47" meats. While I am building on the cheap, I have no issues trying to get some more overtime to pay for my habit. My question for you all, any suggestions(tires, size, retailer)/tires you want to be rid of (reeeal doubtful lol)?

Fwiw Ive been shopping around, and for the price/functionality/size/looks (&i'd they're anything like their 34" siblings) I'm heavily considering 16/40-16 ltb's.
Before I forget, does anyone have a picture of the 16/40's mounted up? The "stock photos" are about all I can see and they're all either pics of the little ones, or the 47's (they all look the same for the most part, but I ahvemt seen the 40's in person). Thanks guys!

Wow, ghey! Stolen?! Sorry to hear it.

Thanks for the pic btw, something about these just looks way meaner than a tsl. I had a buddy with the 34x10.5's and I was impressed with them. They seem really tough.
The sidewalls on those tires don't look quite as aggressive as the 34's (but there's also a lot more sidewall there, too). I highly doubt you had that (very sharp, very clean, very nice) rig offroad, but how did you like them?

Look on Pirate. I noticed a good many sets of 39.5-44" swampers on there the other day

As far as 40" tires go the LTBs would get my vote in the cost effective but real good category. 42" SXs to me would be a very close second if you had the extra cash. Pitbull makes some damn fine tires but I dont have any personal experience with them.

IMO 5.13's are a good match for 42's but if I was going with 44's I would want 5.38's.

pirate classified are seriously your best best by far. you can usually score damn near new sets of big meats for way less than their new price. just have to check it daily and go through the first few pages of it as they have tons of classifieds.

I just did register for that specific purpose. There are TONS of ads! Problem I'm finding is that most of them are yahoos from California. I did contact a vendor about a quote for either 40, 42, or 44" rockers for 16" wheels. Hasn't pm'd me yet. Hopefully I hear back soon.
It'll be a couple three weeks before I have enough for new meats, bit at the rate I'm going I'll def have enough...if I wait four weeks, maybe even to pick n choose thru some good used ads. Seeing some of those posts gives me renewed hope of owning beadlocks and some other goodies.
Has anyone dealt with "tirepackage.com"? One guy says it's a hoax, another says he tried them with no issue. Anyway, they list my 16/40's for $1,229 shipped.

Thank you Dan. 16.1's are actually a 16" rim with a different bead than a typical 16" pickup wheel. I've heard several stories on the differences ranging from "the difference in the two beads can cause serious injury/death" to "that was done to discourage people from trying to run a set down the road". Personally, I'm not scared. I've heard some Alaskan dudes saying the beads seal so tight that they feel (not I, but they) it negates a need for beadlocks. I'm honestly attracted to the fact that they're close (in appearance) to the size of a 40" bogger, but lighter and clean better. But Paul, I do think buggers are bad ***, just not for the price tag. I'm also considering (since here at work I have ample time to ponder) that I may wait on tires, though I don't really want to as their prices at already rediculous & won't get any better, and perhaps invest in a traction aid. I'd like a tough LSD as they're a little easier on axles than a Detroit, but I don't know that there is one tough enough for what my rig will be dishing out. An ox locker would be ideal, but $900 later I prolly couldve snagged a decent set of "backup" tires...

Damn....decisions, decisions...

what axle do you want a lsd in???? either way a power-lok is where it is at for clutch type lsd's. I'd put one in a front any day of the week. it's the track lock's bigger badasser brother, more lock up, and way more case strength. check them out, bronco graveyard sells them whole or in bare case form with the internals separate.

The truck will have a 78 kingpin D60. I hear the powr-lok is a damn good LSD, bu will it hold up to 40-ish" muds/ags? What are the differences in a powr-lok, trac lock and open diff cases? I've got (what I believe to be) a powr-lok in a d70 rear. Being that it has 35 spline shafts, why wouldn't the clutch pack and w/e else is in there work in a D60? Also, please understand...and for the love of god READ; I don't plan on switching carriers, I know a D70 carrier won't fit in the front axle. But why not the limited slip?

The Powrloc IMO is the only choice for a front 60. It has great manners and doesn't break parts. It will hold up to any tire & mine always spins both tires but you never feel it on the road with the hubs locked.
A Trac Loc didn't get it's nick name "trash lock" because it was any good.
An open case has no locking mechanism, so it's good for nothing.
Powr Loc has a bigger ring gear for the 70 so the case is different between the 60 & 70 model but the guts are the same. Dana 70 also has a carrier break just like the 60, so not all carriers will hold all gears.
"I know a D70 carrier won't fit in the front axle. But why not the limited slip? " I don't get what your asking here ? What what limited slip ?

Mark, thx for the info. You actually answered your own (and my) question. The "guts" will fit in a D60 front? I couldn't see any reason why not, as it uses 35 spline shafts like the D70 I have (with power lok). But now that you mention that about a 60 front and a 70 having diff size ring gears, I can see why the carrier wouldn't ever be "swappable"

as for trac/power lok and open carriers, I was more asking about physical differences in the case. But I've seen pics of the trac & powr lok, and I can count the number of open diffs I've seen. Main thing I am worried about, is this rig (that I'm contemplating the powr lok for) will be a dedicated mud/trail rig running 40" ag tires (as stated above). 0% street time. Don't know if tires that big and aggressive will overwhelm a LSD or not. Really considering this over new tires now...
