Tranny help

Hey everyone, I'm about to pick up a 92 ranger 4x4 auto 4.0. When the tranny is in drive everything works fine, but if you put the selector on OD it doesn't do anything. I thought it kinda sounded like a linkage problem or something, but I don't know much about transmissions. The truck is one of my buddies dads and he said the OD stopped working a few years ago, but he never worried about it because it is just used to beat around the farm in. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like the overdrive sprag has broken, its a common problem with those older transmissions. It will have to be disassembled to repair.

Alright thanks for the help. Are these trannys somewhat easy to work with or would I be better off just buying a used one? the boneyard wants $400 + exchange. A little more than I want to spend considering I'm only paying $500 for the truck.

The only reason I'm buyin this thing is so I don't have to fire up the diesel for the 5 min trips that I take frequently.
