Hope I'm not breaking any rules here. I posted an ad in the WTB section and I'm just trying to cover my bases. I'm looking for a F4TZ-6250-B camshaft. It came in 5.0L explorers and 5.8 roller block engines. Ford wants $386 for a new one.
Mike
I found a 95 5.8l in one local yard. They'll sell me the whole engine but not the camshaft. I'm not looking for a lot of horsepower or high rpms. My engine is 1990 5.0l out of a crown vic. I removed the fuel injection and have a ford aluminum 4bbl intake, a holley 470, it will have headers and a single exhaust. I have 3.89 rear end gears and 235/85R16 tires. That should put me around 2000 rpm at 70mph. I want to use my truck as an everyday truck. It will occasionally haul a load in the back and rarely will see a 2500lb trailer.
I've been researching the cam for almost two months now and have determined that the ford piece is the best for me. Problem is I didn't expect the ford part to cost so much.
Mike
The frustrating part will be that you know people are chucking these out...
Try phoning around to machine shops to see if they have any taken out of a motor.
You mention that the cam also came in Explorer 5.0 engines, if so then there will be a lot more of those in junk yards. If you can find one of them that was sabotaged in the "Cash for Clunkers" pogrom you should be able to get the cam.
Thanks for that. I didn't even think of ebay. New question-what different vehicles would've had a 5.0 in 96? I called the people with that camshaft and they don't have a record of what vehicle it came out of. I can think of the F150, Bronco, E150 and the Explorer. I know the explorer has this part# cam but could the others be different? I can't believe this parts house didn't keep the type of vehilce they pulled the cam from on the tag.
Mike
I just got off the phone with my local ford dealer and he told me all 1996 and up 5.0 cams are the same part# so I bought the one off ebay. thanks again guys.
They wanted $900 for the motor. The vic was a 1990 and I've already tossed the intake. It is a roller cam. I haven't built a lot of 302s but have been in to more than a handful and my experience has been that every 5.0, no matter what vehicle it's in, that is 1986 or newer has about a 50/50 chance of having a roller cam in it.
I also kept the AOD out of the vic to put in my truck.
The AOD is getting a fresh rebuild. The F3 is almost 2000lbs lighter than my Bronco. There really isn't much too it.
I thought about the flat tappet route but since it already has a roller in it I couldn't see going back to the flat one.
IF I was looking for a stock roller cam I would post on the various Mustang sites. Those guys are always changing cams leaving them with the stock cam that no one else on those sites interested in it. You can have them for the cost of shipping and not even get your hands dirty!
I would do this myself but alas my 5.8L has a flat tappet cam.
