Question By pass filters

I've got an amsoil bypass kit installed but would like to know if anyone has found an alternate filter to theirs. The $30 a pop bypass filter get expensive when added to the oil change costs.

I know some of the other kits have screw on filters so does anyone know if they are cheaper and will fit?

Thanks Hank

How often are you changing the bypass filter? I'm only changing mine every 15,000 if memory serves me correct.

amsoil states that it should be changed every 25,000 miles.

yes thats what amsoil advertises, but last check at 7000 they told me to change about 10k, and with all the data from here that is about the max to keep the oil from breaking down.

I changed at about 8K and it sure quieted down a lot with clean oil, the bypass just keeps it a little cleaner longer.

I am changing my oil every 7,500 miles, but am planning on changing the bypass filter only every second or third time (just installed the system on my last oil change. I don't think it needs to be changed with each oil change.

I am on my first oil change and I will be testing as I go for my oil interval. I will not go off of some others word for how long I should go, that could be bad...

Texas I considered that but why keep almost 2 qts of dirty oil in when you change? Remember the old messages from way back when when folks would just add oil and keep the filters? Same thing IMO. No I will spend if I have to, but if I can get a suitable substitute cheaper then it will be to my advantage.

Coolant filters are to be changed regularly min of annually but they are inexpensive enough that they could be changed with the oil. I have my coolant system on now and will be changing everything with a flush and refill and probably within 1K after its done. The one site said to change after the 1st 500 miles on initial install so will hopefully have some good results with my planned changes of the coolant filter. Who really knows?

It quieted down because you changed the oil. All the filters in the world won't stop the 6.0 from shearing oil. JMHO but you still need to change the oil every 5,000 miles. If you do oa's then 7,500 max however the cost of the oa's negates any advantage of waiting for 7,500.

If you didn't want the old oil in the system couldn't you dump the filter and then fill with clean oil? It wouldn't get everything, but not much would be left. A bypass filter shouldn't need changing very often like some already said.

I have a drain petcock on my by pass filter canister. No reason to open it up everytime I change the oil.

Changing the oil and not replacing without a new filter(s) is like taking a shower and putting your dirty underwear back on. But that's just how I look at it. Filters are CHEAP when you have to replace injectors.

I have an Amsoil setup and the beauty of the re-circ line is that the old oil in the bypass filter can be pushed out and captured from the oil-fill fitting...I did last week it it worked great....did the oil and oem filter change, then just ran the motor until I seen the honey color coming through and shut here down and topped off.

Never thought of that!!! That's a dang good idea. How much did you collect before the new oil started coming out?
