Whats the skinney on a 4 inch exhaust?

OK, I still have my stock exhaust w the muffler deleate. Does a four in, turbo back exhaust really help with lowering EGT's? Towed my 5k trailer out to Phoenix this weekend using the 80e tow setting and was bouncing off 1000 degrees F in some areas. Sure, there were some points that I ended up downshifting (turning off the overdrive on the automatic tranny) and I understand this to keep the transmission and engine happy and in the power zone, but for those who have the 4 inch exhaust, does it justify the cost and help with the exhaust tems?
Thanks much.

1- I like the way it sounds -vs- stock with no muff.
2- you don't need it unless your puttin out 400hp or better.

but in theroy, get the most air you can in, burn it, and get it out, no back pressure is better
