Stripped Glowplug in head

How many people have ever had this happen? or heard of someone?

As alot of you know i'm building a motor right now as time allows. When I was first tearing down the motor, I noticed that there was what looked like some JB weld all over one of the GP and couldn't get my socket on it. I had to beat it out with a punch. Aparently they had stripped out the GP or broke it off, and then drilled out the threads, put some JB weld on the GP and poked it in there.

Since the GP threads are a retarded thread size and pitch I didn't have a tap or die for them.
But a 1/8'' NPT is very very close to the 10mm x 1.00 that I believe the GP is.

So being that I didn't have any helicoils laying around that size...I just made my own.
I took a 1/4''-1/8'' npt reducer that I had, I threaded it all the way through with the 1/8''. I ran a 1/8'' npt die over the GP threads. Drilled and tapped the GP hole in the head for 1/4''.
Since the top of the reducer would need to be flush with the top of the GP hole where the threads normally start, I took my carbide bit on my air tool and ground down the hex head of the reducer to the start of the threads, but I left 2 small ears on the reducer so I could thread and seat it in the head. Then I put loctite on it, seated it in the hole, took my carbide bit and cut both of the ears off so it was flush with the top of the hole.
Here are a few pictures for entertainment:

Pic after I got done:

Damn, they don't call you Chuck Norris with a wrench for no reason!! More like Chuck MacGuyver on this one though...

I'm just impressed the 'JB weld fix' worked!!

Lmao thanks bro, I just make do with what i've got.
Thats what really got me was that the JB weld actually held it in there, i'm not sure how long it was in there that way, and it sure wasn't loose when I tried to take it out. I know it was a PITA to get out.

I believe the GP threads are 10mm x 1.00 TPmm. My set only went from 9mm x 1.00 to 10mm x 1.25 TPmm and it was neither of those, it is 10mm but had the thread pitch of 1.00 TPmm. But 1/8'' NPT is so close its not even funny, when I ran the die over it, it didn't take much at all off the threads. Which is what I use for a compression tester. I use the flexible line off a grease gun with 1/8'' NPT male on both ends. One end catches a couple of threads in the GP hole, which is more than enough to hold it for a compression test, the other end I just use a couple of adapters to go to my guage.
As long as you just snug it up and not crank down on it, its the cheapest and easiest compression guage for these motors.

I'm just wondering how common it is for that to happen? I personally don't know anyone that it has happened to that I can remember, and I've never had it happen to me before.

This is the second good lesson I have gotten from you today. Thanks Cory.

As for a compression test aqdapter I took an old glow plug and took out the guts. That's as far as I have gotta. Would be perfect if I could figure out how to get some kind of fitting on the end so it could be adapted to the compression tester. Any ideas out there.

Hmmm....I'll be back in a min, Ima go take one apart and see what I can come up with.

How about this Robin?

I twisted off the end and pulled the guts out of it. Then I took a grinder and ground off the tip flush with the body, center punched it, drilled a 3/32 hole in it. Then on the other end, the part that used to be the 10mm hex head, I took a grinder and made it round, then threaded it with a 1/8'' NPT die. You can take a small cutting disk for a dremel tool or a hacksaw and make a cross cut from the top so you can screw it in and out with a screwdriver. The 1/8'' NPT will allow you to adapt it to your gauge.

Damn good way to do it. I never thought of grinding down the hex portion and threading the outside. I got caught up trying to figure out how to thread the inside and there just didn't seem to be enough material to tap.

You know I'm going to steal this idea don't you.

Thanks once again Cory.

Yep I tried drilling and tapping the inside first. There are 2 problems here, one, you have to drill down far enough to allow the tap to go down enough so a 1/8'' npt fitting will actually start in the threads, since they are slightly tapered. If you drill down past the end of the hex head and the drill bit is larger than the GP body, the hex head will fall off if you drill down too far. Since you can't drill down far enough to get enough tap in there, the fitting wont even try to start in the end.
So thats when I just came up with what I did.
No problem Robin, I might suggest getting one of the threaded barrels(female-female) for a 1/8'' npt and threading it on the gp with permanent loctite and have your hose for the gauge connected to that, that way you can screw it in and out with that instead of trying to make slots in the end.
