I would rather have the V10...to much crap to change out for one. Plus you can find parts easier for a V10 than a 460. Plus V10 is much better than 460.
Shoot, the 3V 5.4L V-8 is a better towing engine than the 460. Why would you want to take a giant step backwards in performance, technology, mileage, emissions and reliability?
I would find a used 6.8l 2V PI engine and put it into your current truck or rebuild the current V10 with PI parts. The PI will ahve 310hp and 425tq comapared to the NPI with 275hp and 410tq. By putting a 460 in the truck you just basically made it hard to sell if you wanted to in the future. The 460 also will not meet the emissions requirements for the 1999 MY and has much more emissions (late model FI 460) BS to deal with than the 6.8l.
I guess its unanimous, keep the balance shafted 72 degree motor.
I was hoping to mod the 460 to be better than the v10 in everything power. If I could find a whipple or kenne bell for my v10 then i would be more than happy to keep it. Selling the truck is not an option. Its paid for and was my first late model. I doubt I will ever sell it.
"Has anyone completed an engine swap involving a Big Block 460 into a 99-Up Ford Superduty F450-550?
This is not a "this motor is better than that motor" question -
Not a fuel economy question. Not interested in engaging in an argumentive situation at all. Not interested in options, speculations unrelated questions like "why would you ..... or that's a stupid idea".
This is an older thread being revisited in hopes of getting a legit answer ..... this time.
Hands on real world experience is what I seek.
Mainly seeking motor mount cradle and tranny mount mods and and other useful info would be useful as well as extremely appreciated.
Kinda doubt you'll get much real world experience. While this is by no means the weirdest swap ever, it's a little off the beaten path and it will take some mechanical skills.
I don't understand all the poo-pooing. Power and fuel economy all depend on how each motor is built. I assume we're talking about some custom engine building if we're going through the effort of swapping a non-factory driveline. I doubt anyone would put forth the effort to swap in a docile factory build 460. A properly built custom 460 will thrash a factory built V10 for torque and get about the same fuel economy if you factor in the horsepower per gallon per mile. I expect 1.25 lbft per cube is achievable.
I'm just chiming in here because I'm curious what the plan is and can understand the desire to use a 385 series in a newer-ish truck.

Do tell on the "better" engine if you would offer your thoughts. It would be a plenty of work, but anything can be done. Plus consider emissions BS if your area does it. Personally Id take my 97 F250 4x4 back in a heartbeat. 460 been around for what 3 decades, the "triton" was short lived by comparo. There's also lots of 460 HiPo parts to be had to make a monster torque 460, the V10..nope. Just my $.02 however.

Also a DT360 is on the board for swap options.
When the 6.4L went in my 2010 f250, I started looking around for engine swap candidates ( because no way was I putting another 6.4 in it).
The DT360 was my front runner for awhile but the aftermarket support just isn’t there for it. I ended up going with the engine everyone else swaps into these things ( and because of that, plenty of aftermarket support exists) , the 6bt Cummins.

It's a problem I've had myself (albeit not cuz I was trying to replace a 6.4, only suckers do that ;p). DT360 > Cummins > everythingelse. Problem is, no support for the DT360 cuz it never ended up in a pickup truck.
