I am thinking about making the swap from the ford 460 to a newer truck with a V10. I think I have found a pretty good deal on a truck, but I am curious how many miles you are getting out of these motors. The truck I know the history, and it is all highway miles but it has a 146,000 on it., It is a 2001 short bed quad cab. I am looking for suggestions, my ford now is a 93 ford 460,
Is oregon a state with emmision testing? Genereally you can not put a older engine in a newer truck. I would look into your state regs before buying anything.
I don't think he was talking about swapping engines, I think he talking about swapping trucks. Until very recently I had an Excursion with 153,000 miles on its V-10 (2000). It was running better than when it was new and pulled strong all day long. I think the V-10 is a great motor and my 2006 F250 is getting better and better but it only has 53,000 miles on it.
Mine has 107,000 on it and it runs like a champ. Even though it is the heaviest truck I've owned(cc lb 4x4) It also is the strongest and fastest. This beast impresses me every day. Bob
175k on the ticker and counting. My mechanic has done extensive research on my particular engine because he thinks it is one of the best ever made.... nothing wrong with the motor or tranny yet, and he said it'll make it to 300k no sweat with continued proper maintenance. It's a beast, and will do better MPG wise than the 460.
i went from a 93 f350 460 to a 05 f350 v10 and am glad i switched(except for the payment).truck is alot more comfy/modern and the 3valve v10 will wax the 460.just have to buzz it a little more.doesn't seem to have the off-idle torque of the 460 but from 2500 on up it's not close.
I had a 1995 350 with a 460. Best truck I ever owned. Stupid for selling it. I now have a 2004 350 with a V10. I bought this truck because I regreted getting rid of the 1995. I like this truck very much. Very heavy duty just like th 95.
However, I don't think the V10 pulls quite as good as the 460. Both trucks have 3.73 gears and 285/75/16 tires. As far as the gas milage..... Well around town, 10 mpg from both (loaded or empty). Best ever on highway 13 mpg with 460 and 14 mpg with V10 (empty). If I had it to do over I would still have the 95. The guy who owns it now says he will never get rid of it, so I guess my 04 is the next best thing.
This info is based on my experience with both trucks not hear say, assuming, or guessing. Hope this helps.
making it tough, I like the 460 also. The only thing with it is having to replace exhaust manifold gaskets more often than I would like. And I had the head , and manifold's done, bought all new bolts, I was told they did not come with gaskets stock, anyone have any suggestions on this if I keep the 460
i put thorley headers on mine, and then a banks cat back...no more problems...if u got the money get a whole exhaust all the way from the headers to the tailpipe...banks makes on but it is a little pricey, but if i did it all over probably would have been cheaper or more convenient to buy the entire kit...if u buy my 05 v-10 i deliver it for u
