Does the 2004 v10 have issue of the spark plugs blowing out or was this fixed for this year. I am a little consered about it. I just but a 2004 f250 2wd with 115000 miles on it and wonder if i should change the plugs but am kind afraid to as I have read that there is the consurne of the head getting messed up. Thanks for any advice.
Everything I've read says that the "short threads" problem was fixed by the time the 2004's came out.
That being said, you still have to take great care to make sure the plugs are torqued properly. I don't have the torque numbers right now (that number varies depending on who you ask, actually) but a search should turn up that number.....
Okay thanks. I just bought a haynes manual for it. I just unsure if i should change those plugs now or not because i dont know if the prevoise owner had it done or not.
Check this but I believe its either 7 or 11 pounds. DO NOT use antiseize. all my research indicates the plug problem was corrected sometime in early-mid 03.
You should have the extra threads on your 04' however there is only one way to be sure and that is to count the threads. With 115k on the plugs they need to be changed. The stock plugs start to go south at 50k miles so I change them at 50k miles. I use OE replacement Motorcraft single plat plugs. I use a dab of anti-seize on each plug and tighten them by feel without a torque wrench. You have a hard time getting a proper torque on the rear plugs with a torque wrench and having unlubricated threads will not yield an accurate torque reading anyway.
I also recall and have used just a Dab of anti-seize when we did my son's 01' 4.6 his had about 190k on it at the time,,,,,he is just about 250 k now on it,,,and has recently done the plugs again,,,He says what a difference in the way it runs,,,I recall 14 ft lbs torqe,,,on them,,,Better check on that !
There is a tsb about it... Pretty much electrical issues and leads to over tighten issues. Yeah had to take my truck into dealer about misfire issues and they gave me the memo
The Plugs never blow out unless you put them in wrong.
180 inch lbs with anti seize is the what Ford calls for.
Motorcraft plugs only.
Trust me, I have worked on over 20 of the 4.6/5.4/6.8 modular engines and have never blown a plug out of one. Just take your time and do it right.
Even the early 4 thread heads have no problem holding on to the plugs.
