I went to change the oil on my 05 6.0 and I didn't have any more oil filters so I just went ahead and gave my brother in law a heads up to get me one and bring it that weekend. I had everything else done, and was just waiting for the filter when he got there. Well turns out the nubb grabbed me a wix filter. I had already thrown the motorcraft one out and I needed my truck that night so I just threw it in and was gonna get a new one in the next couple days. Its was about 15 degrees this morning and it started kind of slow and then I just let it idle for about 4 minutes then I came back out and took off and about 1/2 mile down the road I got onto the highway and took it up to 60 and all the sudden I lost all the oil pressure and it made an awful sound. So I pull off and it died almost immediately before I could even get stopped. I went ahead and threw up the hood and the built on filter housing cap on that wix filter was cracked clear up the side. Well needless to say I threw that damn thing away and then got all the oil and filters back to the way they should have been, but it won't start and I'm scared of what repair bills might be in my future. So what should I do and what really happened?
Sounds like you've done what you should do, which was to put the right filter and cap back on your engine and clean up the mess that POS Wix filter musta made under your hood.
I'm thinking that the Wix filter cap was cracked out of the box.
Do you know what oil filters to use in the 6.0 PSD? If so then it seems to me that you should have told your brother in law what oil filter to get! Don't blame him.

Easy now, he could of very well assumed his brother in law knew. Or the parts guy could of been wrong and re assured him it would work just fine, or they could of been out of motorcraft, or, or, or. Too many variables. He fixed the problem, stuff happens.
Glad you got er running. I agree, those pics do belong in a sticky. Moderator?
I have used the Wix filter before and found them to be very good. It appears that it was defective or you fractured it during installation. I personally use the Motorcraft filter as I find it less expensive than the Wix because you are paying for a new cap with the Wix filter. Cleaning your engine compartment with all that oil......not a good picture. Another lesson learned the hard way. MC
I think we are all talking about the actual pictures as evidence to go along with it. If I missed the pictures, I'm sorry.
I hear what you are saying, but all 10+ 6.0L forums I am a member of have Techs and experienced 6.0L owners that constantly say "DO NOT RISK USING AFTERMARKET FILTERS".
What more can you do???? I do not think another sticky or more pics will help. You will ALWAYS have people say "Oh, well that is just an isolated case, and I know better than all those biased Ford fanatics ....... ".
and who knows, maybe they do know better than so many others .......
(trouble is, really we are Racor and Donsaldson fanatics)
Frankly I do not believe that using an aftermarket filter guarantees problems. However, I am sure that many people have had issues with them and that using them increases the chances of having issues. Maybe it is poor design while attempting to get around patents, or maybe it is poor quality material or poor quality control while trying to make a "low cost" product. Don't really care when the cost to lower this risk is so small (use OEM style)!
