Better Transmission?

and well i guess the tranny thats in it will have to do for the time being, i have other things that i need to attend to before that, but i will have to keep my eye out for one of those transmissions

On the subject of the T170... I have one in a '79 Ford E150 with a 302 and I'd like to swap a better transmission in. How difficult is it to swap in the T5, the Mazda, or a ZF?
I'm not familiar with the difference in transmission lengths, shifter location, mating issues, etc.
Any help would really be appreciated. As goofy as it sounds, this van is a bit of a family heirloom with 330k miles on it and I'd like to keep it rockin' with a better transmission. It's really been the only weakness in the vehicle.
