I have read here some of you use wood as a carb spacer? what is the advantage to this? and what other materials can I use? I have plenty of one inch Plexiglas laying around big enough to use, or will this melt? Also, on a 1984 F150/302, can I get rid of the air pump system without inspection problems or other problems? or can I trade off the location with the alternator without a problem, as this pump is quite ugly up top. thanks in advance, vic
Wood for a spacer is used because it does not transfer heat. The same reason they sell phenolic carb spacers, insulating properties.
I have never left an air pump on any truck older than 95' here in central NY. Now days the inspection places have there hands full with the CEL's on the 95' and newer ones.
Thanks for the carb spacer help, after seeing the prices on the spacers, I should just buy one made, yeah, I kinda thought plexi would melt, just wasn't sure it would get that hot above the egr plate. and why did ford put that ugly pump up top and the alternator down low where it gets more water contact? I think it's gonna go... I'll keep it just in case this state of Taxes (NY) goes for the fines on it missing, thanks, vic

It wouldn't be the state...
Tampering with or removing the factory-installed automobile emissions equipment is a

Yeah sounds like the land of the free? especially here in NY. I guess Maybe I'll just try and switch things around? I can remember when cars didn't even have a pvc valve...sorry, getting misty here...Now here you can't even tint your windows at all, it had to come from the factory? does that make sense? already paid that fine. does the guy in a pannel van get pulled over? this is so NY, I keep the pump, but the Ferrari that gets7mpg does what he wants. (lets say he bought it new, for the sake of the gas guzzler tax) sorry, rant rant rant, better now, whats a guy to do? gotta go work on that cloaking devise for it..., vic
I read back in the files on carb spacers that you run a wood carb spacer? when I was looking for one, they say it's for off road use only? that too is not legal for the road? what up with that too? now your an outlaw too, hee hee. yeah here in NY they are even trying to get a law passed to say you can't even change the tire size on the car, If they see what I done to my wifes mustang, she's gonna be an outlaw too? here in NY they don't want you to change anything the car came with, good thing sema was there last time they tried. It dosen't feel like a "Brave New World", though. It feels a little cowardly!!
ctubutis, I hate to admit it but I do remember some of the stuff you mentioned now that the cobwebs have been shaken off. I guess since all the one horse garages that I ever go near don't check that stuff, I conveniently forgot about it. Good reminder!
