Just bought this beast. Lot of problems including turning over and not starting. I'm starting with checking the idle cause it is idling low, but need suggestions where to go from there. Truck is missing a lot and first time with an older truck...help please.
Fuel, air, spark. If it turns over 'normally' but won't start then I would begin at the distributor (points) and work down towards the plugs to make sure you have good, consistent spark. Weak coil or bad points?
If spark is good then I would check fuel flow - maybe a shot of 'quick start' into the carb - to see if the fuel pump/filter needs further checking.
If it turns over slow then the battery/starter would be the place to start. Bad grounds can give us fits on older vehicles, run a jumper cable from the starter housing to a good chassis ground and see if it turns over better.
If it's been sitting for a while before you got it then it could be varnish/gunk in carb causing hard starting and poor idle. Sometimes a thorough dousing with carb cleaner spray will help. I'd prop the chokeplate open, spray a half can in and on the carb then leave it sit for a half hour or so before trying to start it up again.
