Got a '94 B2300 that was brought to me, with a no-start condition, with rough running when it does.
Got it started, and was blowing white out the tailpipe.
Told owner that it was probably a cracked head, or gasket leaking. I wouldn't know for sure until I tore it apart. He said to continue.
Upon tear-down, I did not find an obvious head gasket problem, so I cleaned off the head, and was checking for obvious cracks. During this process, I noticed evidence of water in the intake runners for #2 and 3 cylinders.
Apparently, there is an opening in the water jacket of the head, next to the intake manifold, and the intake gasket had given up, and was letting the engine suck water in through the intake manifold.
Checking the gasket flange of the intake seems to support this, with water staining where it should not be.
Any one else run across this before, and are there other problems related to this I should watch for during inspection/rebuild?
The condition you describe certainly seems possible. Coolant circulates through the intake manifold. I suppose this is to heat the incoming air. The ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature) sensor is located on the manifold.
I haven't had the experience you have, but it makes sense. I would assume replacing the intake manifold gasket would solve the problem, unless something is warped or cracked.
