I'm looking into purchasing an Ex (4x4) and would like some info.. I know all about the 7.3 PSD, because I have one in an F250-SC. So, what's the word on 6.0's. I found an '05 Limited with 143k, excellent condition, for $17,500 (good deal or not), expected mpg with 6.0, etc
I'm also looking at Expeditions.. '05-'06, w/ 5.4, 4x4..(80k-130k miles) is there any "demons" I need to know of with the Expeditions.. Engine life, maintenance, MPG's, price range (excellent condition) for listed miles....
6.0s are tricky, you could find one that was treated badly and come to dump around $5000 for major repairs or get one that's been treated like a prom queen. Make sure that they can show you maintenance records.
that sounds pretty good on an 05 limited. Most I saw were close to or over 20K. Some wiht less than 100K miles were getting close to 30, but nobody was buying them. These things sit on dealer lots for months.
On the 6.0, there are bad ones, it is that simple. you roll the dice. There are also great ones. You need to see a Ford Oasis report. It is possible it had major work done outside a Ford dealer, but not as likely. The big problem on these engines is the coolant clogs the EGR cooler and oil cooler which not only cause both system to run too hot but then cause the headgaskets to fail. If you find one that has had one or both replaced you may be in good shape. Some dealers would replace head gaskets but use original stretched head bolts. those are easy to find, they mark every driveway they visit.
The 6.0 can get great mileage. mine averages upper 18's highway at 70-75. I get over 17 mixed driving, no trailers yet. I have rolled 6K miles so far this year on this rig.
I was not afraid to get one mainly because I found an 03 dirt cheap. The 6.0 is so much cheaper than any other diesel b/c of the bad history. If you do the work yourself, you can upgrade the oil cooler, delete the EGR system completely, do gaskets and ARP head-studs for less than 3K. At that point your engine is as close to bullet proof as you can get.
Studawg, I agree, 7.3's are the way to go, however hard to find. I have located a couple of them but they were ragged out and not taken care of... Can't give away a V10, but seem to be lots of 6.0's around, depending on what a guy wants to pay...
