engion operating temps ????

I have a infrared thermometer and was checking radiator and thermostat housing and oil pan temps and was wondering if any one else has done this and what did they find????

After running for 30 min my ........
oil pan was 160
radiator was 120
and thermostat housing was 156

I installed a new thermostat thinking that my old one was stuck open or had a week spring. I'm wondering if the new thermostat is faulty or does the 6.0 normally run at those temps???

Hmm, your checking these temps once the truck has warmed up?

I wouldn't put the blame on a new thermostat..... you using a scangauge or such in the cab to check your findings?

Not yet.. I got the idea to check the temp that way from the 7.3idi-6.9idi forums. You check to see if your thermostat and cooling system is working right by the reading you get on the radiator top hose inlet and the bottom hose outlet. On those engines the temps should be top 190 bottom 150-160

I've tested two IR scan devices side-by-side and seen a large variation, depending on the type of surface and type of material. I can test mine tomorrow and post the results.

Get yourself some gauges, much easier to diagnose problems that way. Taking temps off the motor will only give you a rough estimate, you also have to deal with ambient air temps... how far you are from the source of heat.... is there anything else in the way that would lead to an off reading. For instance getting temps off the thermostat housing you can easily get off temps from hot exhaust and such.

Getting a scan gauge or such is the best way to read whats going on in our more complicated motors.

Thanks bismic I look forward to your findings

Doing this test to my old idi I was able to diagnose a faulty thermostat. After I replaced the thermostat I was amazed by how operating temp affects the timing which affects fuel efficiency.

I know the 6.0's timing is computer based.
Does the 6.0 use more fuel to help warm up like gas engines do?

Using a ScanGuage II, radiator temp light use is 190°F. Heavy use towing hills will see as much as 207°F with fan on. Oil temps run 5°-8° more than radiator water. Trans runs 150°F-160°F light to heavy use. 2006 PSD

At 50 f outside temps, your oil pan and rad will be a lower temp than the fluid. This heat loss at colder temps is normal. Unless pulling hills moving, water temp will be 185 on mine, only rises if working a abit to maybe 190ish.

I use an IR temp gun to make a wheel bearing comparison from each wheel on my 5th wheel camper. I have found and it also indicates in the manual that distance to the object being scanned can vary. I have also found a large difference in the accuracy of a relatively inexpensive model and a high end IR gun.
