there shouldnt be that much clearance. the snout on starter should fit fairly snug in the index plate. my guess is the plate and mounting holes are worn possibly from a loose starter in the past
This is what I am thinking. The indexing plate holds the starter tight. It should not be able to be moved at all.
it fits snug but the hole where the bolt goes through the starter there is alot of clearance around the bolt. im wondering if the shank on the original bolt takes up some clearance so the starter wont move. I have bolts that are threaded all the way to the head in it now. i know i can loosen the bolts and move the starter quite a bit with the bolts in it. I dont know maybe ill just have to replace the flywheel again and maybe find some original bolts.
ok ill try to find them and try that. i tryed looking for them but they are hard to find for some reason unless i can use regular bolts with shanks on them also do the orignal bolts have knurling on the shanks? maybe that will take up some more space.
thats what i thought. i would think there would have to be more off than that to make it unusable. I will most likely change it agian in the spring but im hoping it will last till then. anybody else have any input?
I had the same problem and i changed the flywheel to make sure and no go. Turns out to be very simple. look at your starter teeth to see where it is catching and and wearing teeth. ok so the only thing you can do is go in or out. use washers to go out but probably not your answer. make sure there is nothing keeping it from going in like the metal gasket between the engine and trans being bent or warped. what i believe fixed mine was an oversied starter cable. if your cable is to small your dropping voltage and current not allowing the bendix to work properly. i went through 7 starters in 150 starts.
i just dont understand why it would work fine for the first couple of starts after installing it or loosening the bolts then it start grinding. im gonna try the right bolts first. i did try and drilling a hole in one side if the bolt hole and threading it to install a screw to push it closer to the fly wheel but that worked for a little bit then the starter would lock up and not turn at all. especially when it was hot.
it sounds exactly like mine. The first start is the best then after 10 starts it would grind a lil then 10 more i was replacing starter. chec to see your starter cable isnt burnt but then check the gage of the wire. turns out my wire was half the size and made all the difference. you should hear it crank now. never sounded so good
