Well the title explains it. I have a 94 F250 and the transmission is shifting bad and wont go into od and the speedometer has quit working. What is this issue? I found it in my book but it says to go to a dealer only to have this checked.Any help would be appreciated,thanx.
What you describe is a common problem on this vintage truck. There are several causes/resolutions. I refer to this thread quite often: E4OD Diagnosis Thread - FSB Forums
The most common cause of your issue is a faulty Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) or wiring. Pull the codes and use that thread in the link above.
I 've had a similar issue a couple of months ago on my E4OD transmission. The tach was erradic, vehicle shifted oddly. Had this problem before and the tach sensor was the problem. Cost about 80.00 and could be purchased only at a Ford dealer. Hope this helps, Tom.
Well, basically your tranny is telling you it's working in "limping mode". It's a fail-safe mode that engages when the E4OD can't gather the information it needs to work properly from the sensors related to it.

VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) has failed.
replace this,and your speedometer will work again,and the E40D (Electronic 4 speed Over Drive) trans will operate normally.
do not continue to drive the truck until this is fixed.the E40D NEEDS to read the vehicles speed.excessive ware will result if you continue to drive it (you can go slow and easy home though,but i would use a different vehicle to go pick up the part with or hitch a ride.)
tip;
when asking the guy behind the counter for the VSS for you '94 tell him the part will be found under ABS.
it's the one that goes in the rear diff.if he looks it up by other means,changes are you'll be back to return a wrong part.
OK, update, I found the culprit, after searching harder on the fuse panel cover this sucker has two fuses that control the speedo and other assorted stuff. Thanx for all the replys.
oh yeah.i shouldn't have skipped over the basics.
this is right where i went as soon as it happened last month.
whenever anything goes wrong like that with this trans,pull right over road side and check the fuses right then,as it could be an easy,instant fix.i carry a combo of fuses in the glove box.
my bad for assuming you've already checked the fuses.
well anyway,that's always good when its an easy fix.
p.s.
yeah,one of them is on with the dome light.what the heck right! lol.
