Does the shifter feel sloppy? Does it take a little "slam motion" to get it into park sometimes? You might have worn out bushings on the shifter tube on your steering column, and/or you might have the two bolts on the back of the shifter tube coming loose. I just did this repair on my truck.
I'm dragging up an old thread instead of starting a new one...
My 02 EX with adjustable pedals will do this time to time after a long drive. I put it in park at a gas station or parking spot and without killing the motor it won't go back to "D". I get out and look under the dash, giggle stuff around and it usually works.
Can you help me with what to inspect on this problem? I can confirm the two torx bolts are tight. I'm looking for the break switch Mark references above?
It looks like I have a motor connected to both pedals, one wire harness on the break and two on the accelerator pedal. What I don't see are serviceable switches on either pedal.
Has anyone done a write up? I didn't see one in the Tech folder. Wanted to ask as I search to resolve this issue.
The brake lights check in post #5 isn't valid. They're on a separate circuit from the one that releases the shift interlock. It's a double pole switch....
The brake pedal position switch is up there on the brake pedal support. Keep looking you'll eventually find it.
A good number of times, it isn't the switch that goes bad, it's one of the wires that goes to the connector for the switch. They can break inside the insulation and become a real PITA to find.
