icp question

I have been doing a bunch of reading here and see icp mentioned a fair bit.The truck I bought now is a project ! Alot of oily mess over the top of the motor so while looking for the leaks found the icp seems to be the main source of oil leak. What symtoms does the icp show when it is failing,I see posts where it is mentioned to unplug the icp on a no start but not how the engine should run without it unplugged.I do plan on purchasing a icp with all the oil leaking shortly but just wondering what to expect on the road when this items fails. How often do they fail? I always have a spare cps but is the icp something that leave me standed also.
Thanks

ICP plays a major role in how the engine performs. Its main purpose in life is to tell the PCM how much high pressure oil is in the heads. It is just a pressure transducer that converts pressure to volts. The PCM needs this information so it can control the pressure by varying the duty cycle of the IPR. If you have a scanner you could see the information it is providing to the PCM and the information the PCM is commanding to the IPR.

If it completely fails then the truck would never start. This is because the PCM expects to see 500 PSI before firing the injectors. When unplugging it the PCM goes into a default mode and assumes 500 PSI on initial start. So if it does not start plugged in but does start unplugged it is a good indication you have a bad ICP.

They seldom leak a lot of oil and still function so your oil leak might be elsewhere.

Thanks,I didn't recieve much feedback and spent a lot of time last night searching and thought the same as you,it shouldn't run with it leaking that bad. There is a lot of oil oil around the sensor and when running it last night you can see the oil running of it slowly.the oil was cold but even then it was completely wet with fresh oil.I didn't know unplugging it would fool the computer.I just had it scanned and no code came up for the icp,I just noticed all the oil while looking for the leak.thanks again.

Where is it leaking exactly? If it's just out of the o ring at the bottom then put on a new o ring. If it's leaking out the top where the plug goes in then replace it.

It really looks like it is leaking by the wires, been leaing for awhile though with all the buildup around it.Once I clean it will run it to make sure it is not just the o-ring.
