If it was me I'd spend the $$ on something else, you already have 3 1/2" with a straight thru muffler. I doubt you'll see anything out of a 1/2". If I would have known I'd have never cut out a perfectly good exhaust. JMHO
Amen brother! I couldnt agree more. I actually like the way straight-piped stock sounds better than 4" with muffler...
This is my question too. Not to hi jack but is there really a difference in egt's between stock exhaust with a straight through muffler and a 4" system??
Not significant, especially on a 'stock' engine. Most people justify the cost with perceived benefits. I've tried to justify 'upgrading' my exhaust for over 200k miles - even AC codes and a 38R and I still dont NEED a 'bigger' exhaust...
Yep.... I wish I'd have known then what I know now. I cut a perfectly good exhaust all to h-ll when all that was needed was to get that big restriction muffler out of there...
Nice pic - thanks for sharing. Now we need EarnestEugene to whip up some math to show the stock piece can flow more than adequate volume for say up to 450HP...
I've spoken to a couple people who were honest enough to say they saw insignificant gains from straight-piped stock to 4" turbo back. I have yet to see anyone's dyno results comparing these options! But, if upgrading stock to full 4" only gains a few HP - I have to believe MOST of that is in the stock muffler.
I tow ALOT and if my EGT's were an issue, there are other things I'd do before ripping out my stock SS exhaust system. Hell, my Excursion still has factory muffler and it makes almost 30psi of boost and is soooo far over the speed limit when EGT's do get high - I've decided to leave it like it is! (but, I may do aeroturbine after reading that thread... )
Looks good! I only had three pieces plus the muffler, you have five plus the muffler. I know you have a longer wheelbase than I do but I wonder why so many more pieces. Maybe a couple shorter pieces adjust better than one long piece? I'm just curious, how's your configuration? I have the downpipe, long straight pipe, muffler, tailpipe. Thanks, like I said, I'm just curious now.
Thanks on the nice comments guys. Yeah this truck is long; my old suburban was easier to park. For the exhaust it was the down pipe, mid pipe with hanger, 18" section clamp/hanger, 34" section, muffler clamp/hanger "T", axel over pipe, and tailpipe with hanger. It was a lot to put together but did not take that much time at all, just a lot of up and down taking pieces off and putting things together.
My exhaust temperatures seem to be down about 50-100 deg, but I do not have any tunes either. I should have taken a picture of the two down pipes looking at the turbo mounting flange and the pipe; there is a huge difference in size at that point. I have noticed the truck does not seem to have the exhaust brake feeling as bad that I was getting in the mornings on cold warm up when I leave to go to work in the morning. I can hear the EBPV now with the 4” system so I know it is still working and coming on.
If a 4" exhaust makes you feel warm & fuzzy then by all means hack up a perfectly good exhaust sys...I was just trying to make the point that there are a lot better place to put that $$ into the truck, especially if it already had a straight thru muffler or straight pipe.Carry On

Lets put a new spin on this discussion...
What do y'all think will produce bigger gains - a 4" exhaust system or a 1.0 turbo exhaust housing (Int'l 444 stock piece) and straight-piped stock exhaust? Its about the same $$ right?
Meanwhile, there's nuthin' WRONG with changing exhaust - but if yer doing it for more power, efficiency and economy - there may be better investments. Just sayin...
Well everybody is entitled to their opinion for sure and the benefits are marginal at best so it is all good. Sense I do live in a state where I will need to smog my diesel and my truck does not require a cat the full system made sense to me. The muffler delete would be nice but was not an option sense it will not pass the visual for smog. $283 is cheap for an exhaust system in comparison to my Harley so I was good with it. I am not sure if I want to run tunes or not so the exhaust system seemed like the next logical step. As with anything there are a lot of different factors people have to weigh on.
I will just add that I tow often and fairly heavy with tunes and EGT's are VERY rarely an issue with my stock straight-piped exhaust. I wouldn't expect that there would be much change going to a 4" system. That being said, I want to, and will probably eventually add an exhaust system because I like the sound of a 5" system with a muffler. But like has been mentioned, when it came time for me to spend money on my truck there was usually something that I wanted more.
I went ahead and ordered the 4" system today. I installed a walker over a year ago, but I never liked the sound at WOT around 2500+ rpms. It seems like it whistles too much for my taste. Also I just installed a DP tuner and I can redline the egt's no problem in 40t towing through the mountains. That is very annoying. So we will see...
