Removing Cats

Is their any negative drawbacks to removing the catalytic converters off my truck? If I do this what do I do about the o2 sensor or whatever it is that goes into the cat? Thanks

On the 86 EFI 302, your O2 sensor should go into your passenger side exhaust manifold. The only thing that should go to your cat is an air hose from the diverter valve.

Besides the possible legalities, why do you want to do this? Speed density EFI engines like yours all run on preset fuel maps, so there won't be huge performance gains from removing the cats. Those systems are designed to work best with all its components intact. If performance is the issue, you'd be far better served fixing the emissions controls rather than trying to remove them.

Although I could argue that you can modify the tune of your vehicle to extract power from the change, I think you should maintain the equipment for legal reasons and it does, to some degree, help the environment.

Modifying the tune on an OBD I ford is a bit more involved... not a flash like later models. It requires custom burned chips and on a speed density system it's pretty much useless. MAF is a whole nother story though...

On mine, the insides fell out of my cats, they were clogged and I'm not going to buy a new replacement with a motor swap coming up. It really just got a little louder and smells a little worse. Power was not really improved.

Not trying to gain any performance or sound out of it, I could really care less about either of the above. I just was curious if maybe they are clogged up a bit beings they look to be the original from 86. Also I am needing new exhaust manifolds or headers both manifolds apperar to be cracked. Is their any advantage one way or the other?

A clogged cat will glow red. There's not a huge advantage to headers on the speed density EFI engines without a lot of other tuning and upgrades. PM me if you decide to go with manifolds. I can help out there.
