ok, so i rescued this pretty decent 79 4x4, 351m/400 from going to the scrap yard and figured i could make a couple bucks on it.
the problem i am having is that when i try to start the truck it tries to run but spitts and sputters like its out of time. i have verified all the timing, this isnt the 1st ford project ive taken on so i know all the basics. i was hoping i am overlooking something simple. its getting spark, getting fuel, and is in time yet it barely runs and even while its doing that its spitting a little fuel out the carb like a spray. i have eliminated vacuum issues by temporarily doing some plugging off. kinda a little dumbfounded right now cause i know its probably something stupid but i figured id ask. thanks for the help guys!
just to add.. when it starts i have to hold the pedal to the floor to get it to run, engine sounds ok but wont build good rpm and with the fuel spray i dont wanna push it and start a fire. as soon as i let off pedal it dies. i have installed a new fuel pump and sending unit because when i first got the truck i could not get fuel to the carb, issue was with plugged sending unit, i just installed the pump also cause it was cheap.
yeah i was thinking maybe a quick carb rebuild, just didnt wanna waste the time and money cause the only thing throwing me off was the fuel spitting back up thru the carb, it looks like its getting fuel fine and i kinda assumed that it would at least idle ok and maybe accell a little but this thing wont even run at all unless its held to the floor and even then its pretty rough and shaky almost like its not firing on all cyl.
Pull the carb and check float level/stuck float valve. You can also try pinching off the fuel line to the carb while you try to start it. If it's getting too much fuel, it'll finally start and run 'till you let go of the pinch, then it'll flood. Is the choke fully open? If not, open it by hand and block it open, then start it with the throttle wide open until it fires. Fuel spraying out of the carb usually means too much fuel.... If it fires at all, it's probably not an ignition problem.
