My factory 6-disk CD changer in my 1998 250 recently stopped working. It cycles through the disks, but never plays them. I have been trying to find a replacement, but not having much luck. I just want to go back with what was in the truck when new. The unit lasted 12 years...Any ideas on where to find either a Ford replacment, or, say, a Kenwood, etc. that will last a while? Thanks.
Hi. The OEM offering is pretty poor. I'm shocked you got that many years out of it honestly. I got 3 years out of the one in my Explorer, and replaced the headunit in my F150 2 days after purchasing.
Are you mainly listening to CDs? Do you use an iPod or another MP3 or USB storage device?
The aftermarket offerings are suprisingly inexpensive and the sound quality is far superior to the stock headunit. I put a $150 Pioneer DEH-3200UB (new model is the DEH-3300UB) and I'm overly pleased. It's only a single disc, but has iPod and MP3 capability and controls.
Try Crutchfield: Car Stereo, Speakers, Home Theater, LCD TV, Digital Cameras for the aftermarket options. Go to the "outfit my car" portion, put in your year and model and their site will walk you through what fits.
Thanks, man. Yeah...I was surprised I got that many years out of the changer, too. I will go to the website you referenced. I mainly listen to CDs...do not have a MP3. I remember when old school was the 8-track player and then the cassette tapes...this is making me feel old.
Thanks, again for the tip.
If all you're looking for is CD capability, then you should be able to find a decent unit for $100-150.
If you don't feel comfortable installing an aftermarket head unit yourself (honestly it's almost plug and play) then your local car audio store or even Best Buy can install for you in about an hour. Most rates run about $50-75 for the install.
Good luck!
