i noticed the truck running louder so i looked under the hood. the air filter minder is half yellow so i ordered the filter from the dealer- will be here this afternoon. i noticed the noise (air)is coming from under the silver metal cover over the turbo's. i havnt noticed the truck running bad, just loud.......... what could this be?
remove the 8mm bolts then remove and inspect the bottom side of the shield for black soot. most likely leaking from graphite sealing ring where the turbos meet together. the "wire mesh" looking ring is not an actual gasket.
ok- went to remove shield- all bolts removed THEN the one in the back under the cowl...... not even 1/4 turn and the head popeed right off. damn. ayway there is a metal pipe running over the shield so it wont come off to see under it. there is linkeage next to the shield that may be for the turbo---- with truck running i applied preasure to this and the noise changed. i am sure the noise is turbo related ....... is this a large repair?
there are 2 pipes that come up from the manifolds to turbo that could leak at connections, also one coming from off the right side up-pipe is another pipe with the doc (Diesel oxidation catalyst) that connects to the horizontal egr cooler on left side. not to mention the down pipe from turbo to the dpf, muffler, and tailpipe. turbo/exhaust leaks are not much fun to find or fix on 6.4l. hope this helps.
eta: the most common is a crack where the flex joint is on right manifold to turbo pipe. hard to find the soot because its usually the side facing the back of engine.
we are pretty sure it is exhaust related but cant find hard evidencew to support this. if so is this type of issue covered under esp extended warrenty?
I am having the same problem, on a whim I sprayed soapy water all over the turbo and found it to be leaking where the rod connects into the high pressure turbo. I dropped it off at the dealership a few hours ago and they told me the warranty is 5 years 100k so that was good news to me.
