56 w/o paper work.. should i?

hello guys. names Fern. i have a chance to pick up a 1956 Ford F-100. the truck is currently in ny state. and the guy that has it only has a bill of sale for it. he has no other paper work. i am from nj and i wanted to know the steps or guide lines to acquiring either the transferable registration of ny or how to get a title for it in nj.

i dont want to jump in if i cannot drive it on the road bec of paper work. there should be a way to getting lost paper work.

thanks in advance.

State of New Jersey - Motor Vehicle Commission

this is what i got from there:

Guidelines for Transferring a Vehicle into New Jersey
From a State That Does Not Issue Titles

1 The previous owner’s registration is required

2 A notarized bill of sale from the previous owner is required.

3 A pencil tracing or photograph of the vehicles VIN plate is required.

4 A photocopy of your driver’s license.

5 A completed *OS/SS-7 “Application for Certificate of Title” and/or a completed *BA-49
“Registration Application”

i can do all that less the first one... he doesnt have the registration. only a bill of sale...

If he can't produce the proper paperwork, then he should go with you to the DMV with everything else to answer the questions, sign the forms etc.

You would be foolish to pay for this with the papers you have now. It could be stolen, and you'll lose the whole thing.

thanks 85,

i spoke to some one about this (not from dmv) and he said that the LAST registered owner of the vehicle has to go to dmv in ny and apply for a new transferable registration. then he/she can sign it over to me.

here my next question: WHERE THE HECK WILL I FIND THIS PERSON... ARE THEY EVEN STILL ALIVE ?!?!

this is becoming a headache. i am double checking with dmv today.

okay after an hour and half on hold for the next Representative.... i found out through ny state dmv what to do.

before i perches the vehicle i would have to do a "vin history report" where i fill out MV.15 form with the vehicles vin number and nydmv will send me back (by mail) all registered owners of that vehicle with addresses. then it is up to me to go to the last one and have him/her fill out a "transferable registration form" and when they got it back sign it over to me.
SIDENOTE TO THIS ^^ the sale would have to show continuity. so if you buy it from someone and you tell them that.. then the transferable registration from the last known person would have to be transfered to the person you said you bought it from. so what i ask was if i can get just the last know registered person to sign it over to me instead of taking an extra step he said as long as you bring something to nydmv saying its officially yours your okay... so that being said.. SKIP that extra part.

this is sofar what i have in ny. jersey is a whole other ball game!

SIDENOTE: all vehicles 91 and newer HAVE to have titles in the state of ny. anything before that can be done with either a title and/or transferable reg.
