360 Block I.D.

Hope y'all can help. I'm gonna rebuild the 360 in my`72. Want to make sure its really a 360. The VIN# says it is,but don't know if its ever been changed. You know how that goes. So what numbers on the block do I need to find & where do i find them? And when I do get them where do I go to look up what they mean. Thankx for all the help.

finding out

the 360 and390 had the same bore.so you only need to measure the stroke to find out which engine is in the truck.

yes measure the stoke 3.50"=360 if 3.75=390. also if you have the motor out and the flex plate/fly wheel off and can see the back side of the crank. if it has a half moon cut out of it then a 360 if not it could be a 352 or 390 or bigger.

You can check the stroke by pulling a spark plug and using a dowel to see how far the piston travels. To be certain, there is a stamped code on the crank, usually on the first counter weight, of course this would be if it is out of the truck (better than the flex-plate mount, the 352 and 360 use the same crank). Tell us what you find, we can tell you the details. You can also check in with the guys in the FE engine forum further down the forum list.

Mike, Next time you measure the stroke try a piece of white 14ga house wire. You will find it works much better than a wooden dowel.

Nope the tag is long gone.Probably when they changed the intake to a 4bbl. Is there any other stamped numbers to check?

Casting numbers on FE engines are worthless for ID'ing the size or the vehicles that it was originally installed in.

Casting numbers cannot be cross referenced to Ford part numbers.

1968/76 F100/350 360/390's use the same block. The bore is the same (4.05"), the stroke is different. 360: 3.50" / 390: 3.78"
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The 352/360 flywheel (C5AZ-6375-K / Marked: C5AE-6380-J) uses an 11" clutch on a 12 3/8" bolt circle // The 390 flywheel (C5AZ-6375-L / Marked: C5AE-6380-K) uses an 11 1/2" clutch on a 12 7/8" bolt circle.

The 352/360 flywheel was used in: 1965/67 F100/350 352 / 1968/76 F100/350 360 / 1965/67 Passenger Car 352.

The 390 flywheel was used in 1968/76 F100/350 390 / 1965/71 390 Passenger Cars.

The same A/T flexplate (C5AZ-6375-D) was used in 1965/67 F100/350 w/MX C-O-M / 1968/76 F100/350 360/390 C6 / 1965/71 352/390 Passenger Cars w/FX & MX C-O-M & C6.

Thank you all very much for the help. I ended up doing it the ol' fashioned way. Just pulled it out. Found out it's a remaned engine. 40 over 360 with 20 under crank bearings. Still in really good shape. Just gonna freshin it up & stop all the oil leaks. Thats the real reason i had to pull it. Leaked from everywhere. Got to the point of 4qts in a couple days. Figured it was time. The AZ heat wasn't very nice to the gaskets & seals.LOL.
