My bronco uses about 2 1/2 quarts of oil inbetween oil changes, which is abotu 3000 to 4000 miles. Is that OK? there isn't any blue smoke and it seems to run OK. Sewcond question a 91 only ahs one O2 senor, right? DO i need a spcieal tool to change it or is a wrench or socket all i need? Thanks in advance
About the oil leak, you probly have a small seep from the valve covers ,intake, or main seal. Nothing to worry about, just keep it full all the time and make sure it doesent get real bad. My 82 bronco with the 302 leaks form all three of those parts and I leak about 3 quarts between oil changes.
Good luck about the o2 sensor, I havent played with anything past carburators.
Good luck
the vlave cover gaskets were replaced a few months ago. everything under the hood looks clean i don't see any oil leaks i'll look around under there again
i use havoline 10w-30 the motor has 104,000 I changed the PVC valve over the summer. Which kind of reminds me about a question i wanted to ask. THe PCV valve is supposed to be in teh pass valve cover under the intake manifold right? Mine has an elbow i guess and a hoe the extends it a few inches out and then the PcV valve
I have a 92 XLT w/351 and I only have one O2 sensor it is on the Y-pipe of the exhaust right near the starter. Yours is probably the same, if so all you need is a 7/8" open end wrench. Make sure you apply the anti-seize compound that comes with the new sensor onto the threads. Makes it easier to take off next time.
Yes to the PCV valve question. If its been replaced, does it have one or two ports in it? I know that the last time I replaced mine, the one I got had two ports in it and a plastic plug for the top one. (Aftermarket engineers gettin' lazy I guess). I only ask because leaving that port open will wreak all sorts of havoc with vaccuum and such and could leak oil too.
Another "seep" point for the 302's & 351's is the valley gaskets under the lower intake plenum at the front and rear of the block. Both mine (before the new 302) and my brother's '76 302 seeped oil from these gaskets. The seep is rarely enough to do more than just build up lots of sludge around the base of the distributor and right under the thermostat water neck in the intake on the front end.
As to the O2 sensor, yes a wrench should be all that is required. I can't recall the size right now. And a LOT of elbow grease and some convincing expletives if it has been in there a while.
I assume you are from the northeast going by your name. I would suggest that at your next oil change use 15w-40 Rotella T. The max recommended oil weight for your Bronco is a 20w-50 so moving up a little won't hurt. The thicker oil will help if it is leaking or burning it. The heavier oil should not present any cold weather start up problems.
