I went to install a GPR LED on my wifes excursion but there is no glow plug relay!!! there is only a AIH relay. Behind that relay, there is a box that appears to have wires running into it but no relay. is this the GPCM??? if so, is there any way to run an LED light from it to the dash like i am doing in my truck??? i thought this would be easy!!!!
Yep, that is the GPCM. Don't know a damn thing about it so i will let someone else answer. In the meantime, what are the colors and size gauges of the wires?
it appears to have two harnesses, i assume one for each bank. i would think that one would tap into one wire in each harness then splice into one hot wire to run to the hot side of the switch? i'm no electrician but that sounds like it may work to me. i just need someone else who has pioneered this to tell me which color wires to tap into.
you are the man!!! Thanks a BILLION! i have been looking for a diagram like this!!
Now, however, i am about to prove i am a moron when it comes to electrical stuff!!!
It would stand to reason that a diagram like this would tell someone knowing more than i potentially needed information to do what i am attempting. Yet given my remedial knowledge of all electrical, the mystery is still not solved for me. What wires should i tie into to run to the hot side of the light? Surely not all of them? There are some other wires, if i recall correctly, that i will take a pic of tomorrow. One is solid red on one bank. also both banks have a Br-Or wire (big wire) i think this is 12V as it appears to be the same wire that runs to the alternator.
On a good note though, i got the red led wired into my NON-CALI truck!!! Now if i could just figure out patty's!
The way I read the diagram you just have a hot wire to each individual glow plug instead of the big 12v hot wire off the relay. You should be able to run your LED off any one of these wires. I assumed the letters in the diagram were a color code for the wire & stripe on wire, but since I don't have a GPCM to look at I don't know.
You should be able to look at the wire location on the plug and test for voltage with a multi meter as soon as the key is turned on. Once you've confirmed one of the Glow plug wires you can just splice into it for your light.
I agree with Chris. It looks like you have 8 wires to chose from, any one of the wires to the glow plugs. I would be careful splicing into the GP wires (don't use one of those "skotch-lok" things) because if what I read is correct, the GPCM is looking at the current for each glow plug individually. I assume this is for emissions, since this is a Cali truck. If you add a little resistance to a single GP lead, the GPCM might throw a code saying a GP failed. Not sure, but worth keeping in mind.
hey you are smarter than the average bear!!! sounds like it will work like a champ, my question now is:
by tieing into one of the GPs will that cause the voltage to that gp to drop thus not energizing it enough? or will it(the tied in wire) not get enough voltage to power the led? or if the GP shorts will it fry anything else (i guess thats what the inline fuse is for eh?)? i just want to make sure before i go tearing into it again like i did this afternoon only to be choked in the gate so to speak.
Rich makes a good point about the PCM possibly having some issue with the voltage due to some CA environmental issue, but the LED should be a low draw light. The worst case should be a CEL if the computer has some objection to your light. If that happens you can always remove the light.
I'd wire the light up without drilling any holes to mount it and drive it around for a week or two before you do the final mount.
funny u say that, i already mounted the light. since i live in Greenwood, SC who knew i would have a freakin left coast vehicle. so much for buying local!! anyway, operating under the assumption i would have a GPR i mounted the light neatly first and then gotto the ohter side to find out uh-oh. what the heck is going on? anyway. i will take a pic of it and post tomorrow, we may be able to beat this thing yet!!!
It should be fine. Each GP has enough variation in it that the LED should not affect it. The LED probably only draws about 1/1000 of what the GP draws, so it should be fine. Chris makes a good point though, install temporary until it has proven itself not to mess with the GPCM.
EDIT: It could always be used to indicate something else if it does not work for the GP's
And another thing..........i wonder since my X is a cali truck, should i send my DP back to Jody to have him recalibrate? i wonder if there are any settings that are different and such?
