Converting to EFI

Just fishing for some thoughts on switching from carburetor to EFI. I have a 87' F350 crewcab with 4WD. It has a 460 motor and I just finished putting in a new (rebuilt) carburetor. The down side is I am in California and have to deal with smog crap. Does anyone know how much something like this cost or if it even worth doing? Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks

I wouldn't bother but if you do I would find a donor truck to pull everything from efi and smog...

honestly.... for it to be done right, it would be easier to just sell your truck and buy an EFI truck.

Was your truck carb'd as OEM? If so, stick with that.

Yes, the 351 and 460 was still carbed from the factory in 1987, witch was the last year.

Try anything you can to stay AWAY from EFI.

Alot of us would love to convert to carb from EFI.....

What they say. You would need the EFI heads, intake manifold (complete with everything), all sensors, engine wiring harness with computer.
With the new carb, float level set and timing good surely you should pass the emissions junk.

x2, except if you have a carb, you really should stay carb and OEM to pass smog.

The OP needs everything the vehicle came with as far as smog equipment. IF he were to change to EFI, he would have to update the whole system to meet the EFI model standards--almost impossible.

If this is an unmolested vehicle, OP should be in good shape. Doesn't matter if it's 49 states or CA, just needs to be OEM & functioning properly.

IF this is a low mile vehicle subject to short trips, sitting, etc, take it out on the freeway and keep it out of OD for 10-20 miles at 60+ mph. Get the cat good and hot, and blow a lot of air through it. Smog tip of the week it seems.
