What is the best advice for a novice owner concerning an easy fix for a leaky fuel tank? Replace with one in the bed, remove old tank and try patching, buy a fuel cell?
It all depends on where and how bad the leak is. If its in the field of the tank, I wouldnt bother cause you dont know the condition of the rest of it. If its at a seam, its possible to fix, but again you wont know the extent of the real damage.
As for putting one in the bed, that would depend on what you are looking for as far as looks, plus if you still use it as a truck or just as a street rod. Personally I dont like tanks in the bed of trucks.
Fuel cells are great for race applications, but may not pass vehicle inspections for your state.
What year is your truck? There might be some reproduction tanks out there, or you could also have a local machine shop/dheet metal shop fab a new one to closely match the existing tank.

Junior High teacher. If your leak isn't too bad, Por 15 is a company that sells a tank leak repair kit that sound pretty good. FUEL TANK REPAIR KIT-POR-15 Inc. Probably will have to remove the tank to use it though. Most custom truck builders take the tank out of the cab and install one under the bed. You don't have the smell and danger of fumes.

I see you're in OH. I have a "good" '42-47 tank that I'll give to you if you want to come and get it. I'm 15 mi. north of Pittsburgh about 2 mi. from the Butler Turnpike exit. Let me know and I'll get you directions.
Thanks John I will keep the offer in mind, but I think I am either going to seal this one, or get a universal tank and put it in the rear of the truck.
A number of years ago I had the same problem, researched a lot of the slosh around products and finally decided to have Gas Tank Renu (Gas Tank RENU - USA) rehab my tank. They have a process that cleans the tank, repairs holes and coats the inside and outside with some kind of sealer which is baked on. It's not cheap but if you want to retain your original it's a good solution. I had mine done almost 10 years ago and it still in great shape.
Here's another alternative which I used on my 47. Didn't like sitting on the gas tank and perhaps enjoying a good cigar. Also didn't want to destroy the "factory" look. See the bottom of page 1..
