your problem is probably an ADD-ON that got installed. ie is notorious for these and activex controls. malware and virus scanners usually will not detect these. got into your internet options and take a look. It also wouldn't hurt to delete the host and config files (c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc).
FireFox is by far the best browser. People that complain about memory leaks need to reevaluate their configuration.
Thanks, Stewart. That's sort of similar to how things progressed with BitDefender and Comodo for me, but it almost now seems like Comodo is beginning to get a little fat on memory as well.
Prevx is different in that, the database as a whole isn't stored on your computer, with the needed daily updates to keep it current. The database is stored on their computers, so you HAVE to have Internet access for Prevx to work. That's why it's such a small footprint and doesn't hog resources.

David:
Thanks. A far as deleting the host and config files... can you be a little more specific? I would hate to delete something I shouldn't.
Also, what am I looking for in the Internet Options as far as addons?
Thus far, Comodo is usually pretty good about halting Addons and Active-X issues by asking for permission, but I could easily have "approved" something I didn't know was not good for my system, too.
To be honest, I haven't used anything except Symantec, Prevx, and Ccleaner in the last 4 years. i know Our corp office is moving towards Microsofts latest anti virus soon, but I have no experience with it yet.(I find this one a bit ironic, only MS can sell anti virus for their poorly written full of bullet holes OS, but hey...)
You are going to be happy with win 7 once you get past the learning curve, it flat flies, but you will need a minimum 4 gb of ram, thats been my base install to make it livable. All of my engineering units have 8gb.

You can delete all the files in the c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc folder and reboot. Windows will recreate them.
As far as the add-on, it is easy to tell. Disable them all and see if the problem goes away. Then you can enable the ones you know you need.

I have 4gb already and am sort of expecting to increase shortly to the middle ground at 6gb by swapping one of my 2gb simms with a 4gb unit. That way, I can still have some "upgrade" room when I get fully loaded in the future.

Thanks. Clear and easy to follow. I'll play with it tonight a little and see if I can gain any ground on that front.
OK... deleting the etc folder files made no difference at all. I'm going to plan on backing up my stuff on this machine between now and the weekend so I can start my new life on Win7 this weekend.
I really appreciate the input you guys have offered as I have tried to resolve this issue.
I have an aside question for Visseroth... what type of business do you work in? You referred to "engineering machines"... are they running CAD systems, or what? My curiosity is up because I work in a large Engineering/Construction firm myself.
I was just using my 64bit version if internete explorer and I was having the same issue with it going to a blank page if I didnt hit stop. I switched back to my 32 bit IE and it doesnt do that. Wonder if that is what makes the difference. I am running 64 Bit windows vista BTW.
