We have an 02' explorer - quite the dog. I see Ford has a new and improved one now. With the crossover Edge, and the Explorer going to a inibody, I don't see the need for the Explorer. Any thoughts??
Looks like the Exploder would handle a little rougher road or off road than the Edge, although I know because it doesn't have a ladder frame, a manual gear box with straight cut gears, a manual two speed TC, solid axles, and tube-type tires on split rims that it really isn't worth a crap as an off-roader.
I think if fills the segment of the population that need minivan space with subtle off road capability. Say you have three kids a dog and want to camp or get onto the beach. Sure the expedition would work...but the explorer is more fuel efficient and easier to park etc. Perfect for the guy with a super duty that needs a "softer" yet slightly capable family hauler that the wife would drive daily.
Just my $.02
The unibody being implemented here is the strongest unibody Ford or any automaker for that matter has ever built. It is stronger than the S10 chassis which had offroad capability, so it should work just fine with the new Explorer.
I'd say the new Explorer will suit the same people the old one did. It still has descent ground clearance. Its larger than the Edge, and more offroad capable than the Flex.
