Ignition coils

I have a 2001. Will the ignition colis make the check engine light come on if there is anything wrong with them. The truck runs good am going to take a trip and was checking everything out I didn't want to pay a shop to check them out if nothing is wrong or if the check engine light would come on if something was wrong with them.

Indirectly, it will trigger the CEL. It will cause fuel from being burned and trigger a sensor in the exhaust.

Do you already HAVE the check-engine light on, or are you just asking about it?

The simple answer is MAYBE.

99.9% of the time, you will get a light telling you something is wrong. Code reader will tell you what, most of the time. If a coil is bad it will show.

If you have a bad coil you will know it, it will run like crap whether your check engine light is on or not. So to answer your question if the truck is running good and the check engine light is on you may have another problem but it's not a coil.

That's not always true, and almost NEVER true with the OBD-I V10s.

Sorry, I sit humbled. In my experience the computer tells of miss fire and tells which cylinder if you have a code reader. However, On the trucks i have worked on, (mostly 97-04 v-8 and v-10's), The cell has not come on before I fix them. The customers have told of running like crap and I see the 'pending' code and not a light. Maybe the light would never have come on. Again, sorry, I sit here humbled. 99.9% is a ridiculous number also.

Not a problem, man... from the Tech Folder:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...t-come-on.html

The V10 in most F-series that are over the 8500lbs at the time of manufacture, do not need to adhere to the OBD-II standards of emissions controls.

So, while not strictly required by the OBD-II standard, I still don't get why Ford did it this way. Maybe to keep the warranty claims down
