So Guess what guys, I called my dad to let him know I made it to Iraq ok and then he said: Bad News, cant start the F-250. I was like WHAT!?? WHen he turns it over the starter just sounds like it grinds on something. He pushed the vehicle and let the clutch out to turn the crank a little bit and then it turned over and started (<----Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?????).
Second Issue, the truck is losing Gear oil in the T-18 transmission and the rear differential....somehow.
Third Issue, He also said there is a leak at the front of the crank below the bottom pulley, I freaked out needless to say, he dont know where the leak is coming from, pictures will follow i just want an idea of what it might be?
Man, all that happen at once?? So for the 3rd issue see fluid on thr ground and look up to see it running down the front? Or did he actually locate the leak? Oil or coolant?
The differential leak I knew about, The T-18 transmission leak I had no idea til I replaced the U-joints in the rear driveline. The leak on the front of the engine I had no idea about because its just started. He personally seen it and ended up throwing an oil pan under the engine to save the driveway. He looked up and it was directly below the bottom pulley. He thinks it might be the gasket on the front of the engine. Its oil and its being thrown out at about a quart and a half every thousand or so miles from what my dad is guessing because of the high amount of oil on the axle and other parts of the engine. I was personally shocked by this because it has been freshly rebuilt, and I changed the oil when I got it but have only drove 3,500 miles on new oil and didnt think to check for leaks because it didnt leak when I first got it. A main gasket for the block should not die after 38,000 miles. I think something might be loose. Anybody in the montana area care to lend a soldier a hand?
Starter noise may have been a momentary glitch with the starter over-run clutch or it could be that there is a bad spot on the flywheel gear teeth.
Engine oil leak sounds like a leaking front crankshaft seal but the area would need to be cleaned and inspected for the source.
Over run clutch? I might be having a brain fart but i know that clutch is brand new. If i get the crank turned a little bit it will turn over all i want. Then if i stop cranking i have to repeat the process in order to get it to work.
The over-run clutch is the little drum that is behing the drive gear on the starter motor. When it slips it can sound exactly like gear teeth grinding.
Will quite often catch on second or third try of the starter.
