My truck has been throwing a cel for the last week or so. It has always been P0405. I cleared it once and it came back only a few hours later.
So I dug into it today and removed the egr and it was super dirty. Its the first time i've pulled it in the 50,000 miles that I owned the truck. ( I know I know)
The egr was filthy as imagined. See picture. I looked in the hole where the egr goes and it was also full of carbon and soot etc etc. What causes this and how can I clean it? I know it cant be good.
you can use carb cleaner on the egr valve, but dont use brake clean on it.unless youre going to remove and clean the intake man. i wouldnt disturb anything in there.what ever you dislodge and cant get out is going to end up in the cylinders.you could try to vacuum it out with a shop vac i suppose, but youll never get it clean without removing the manifold.all that stuff is from the egr system.
1. If you have not pulled it ever, it may be a legacy problem that dates from bad fuel years back. 2. Clean it, and it may never come back dirty again. 3. Consider buying a brand new EGR valve from the dealer or Partsguyed.com If you do not have EGR valve testing capabilities, that make sure you got one that does not have a electrical fault. 4. Give it a real good Italian tuneup to blow carbon out of system for next few weeks... once a week. 5. Clear codes I would disconnect the batteries and do a system reset at same time.
