New to the forums around here, did some searches but did not come up with any hits so I will put this out there.
I have a 2008 F350 that I am pulling ~11,000 lbs. (hitch mount) not 5th wheel. The trailer is 25 feet in length. I am using a weight distribution hitch as well right now.
I am considering installing airbags for better stiffness and support. What do you guys think? anyone else pulling the same and what have you done?
Is the rear of your truck sagging much? If you don't need the extra load carrying capacity, you might be better served with a better set of rear shocks. I'd look into the Rancho 9000XL adjustable shocks, those allow you to crank them up for high load handling and lower them back down for a smoother ride when unloaded.
Airbags all the way. I've read that add-a-leaf adds stiffness to your non-towing ride. Adjustable airbags can have you riding nice and level without the stiff ride. Don't bother with ones in the front though, I don't notice a bit of difference with or without them.
i bumper pull a 9000lbs. camper w/ weight dist hitch and air bags. its my 2nd truck w/ bags...i love them. i mounted my compressor behnd my rear seat. it keeps it out of the elements.
I have a 5th wheel and installed air bags because it squatted my truck just a little more than I like. As an added benefit, they made a very noticable difference in the ride while towing. Without the air bags, a hump on the interstate (like an overpass) would cause my truck and camper to bounce a little. The air bags totally eliminated that. I imagine that you would see similar or better improvements in a bumper pulling setup. I'm very happy with them and think I will have them on my future tow vehicles.
Hello, I agree with everyone else. I bumper pull a 28 foot trailer around 12500#'s. With an equalizer hitch. Before airbags my truck was fairly level, but I could still fill the front was still a little light feeling. I got a pair of Firestone airbags for $10 bucks barely used(Seen them at a yard sale, asked the little old lady how much they were, and if she new what they came off. She said her husband had a ford truck like mine, and said how about $10. I couldn't give her my money fast enough. Best money I spent. She said she didn't know how much her husband spent for them, and said if he wanted more money, then he should have been home.) I have towed about 300 miles with them now and once I found out the correct air pressure to run them when loaded. They are great.
