i have a 2000 ford f250, recently noticed my MPG is really bad, was looking into a 4r100 to 5r110 swap cause i knew it had more gears, started reading and found people saying that the 4r100 has 4 gears plus overdrive, making that 5 shifts total. is this true or am i miss reading things????

Doesn't matter. If you are trying to save money, you will spend more than it is worth to swap it out.
well im getting 13 mpg and spending about $400 on fuel a month. and if my trans is skipping a gear that would be a good reason to rebuild or by a new one. so it does matter.
I don't think you can install a 5r100 in a 7.3 truck, the programming is not compatable.
What are you using the truck for? Hot shot delivery pulling a trailer or something?
Need info. What gear ratio are you running, etc.
more hot rod, 3.73 rear end, 35" tires. my 4r100 shifts 4 times and im in overdrive at 40 mph (my chip lowered shift point) without the chip i **** at 45 but i get 12 mpg.

So swapping from a 4r100 to a 5r110 will do absolutely nothing to change the downshift RPM's out of top gear. Basically 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears in the 4r100 are identical ratios to 3rd, 4th, and 5th in the 5r110.
ok i saw that post to thats why i decided to post on here. so really the question and it seems the answer is that my 2000 ford has 3 shifts 4 gears. i did see that the excursion in 2003 had a auto 5 speed.

I think the Excursion you are looking at would be say a 6.0 excursion
I think you might be confusing one of the gear ratios with the torque converter lockup clutch.
I've never heard of a 7.3 with a true 5 speed automatic transmission.
In 03, there were 2 Powerstrokes, be it the truck or SUV. The early 03 units were still 7.3 and the later ones were 6.0
i know the difference. it for sure a 7.3l and watching his tach compared to mine is completely different, im in overdrive at 40-45, he has a shift at 40-45 and shifts into overdrive at 55.
it might be the torque converter, but than why doesnt mine work? if the torque convert wasnt working would my MPG be lower than normal?
