I've been into hundreds, maybe a thousand FE's. Never seen a factory 390 with anything but a straight up set in it. If Ford built them I never seen it.
Seems like for 20 years I was turning 360's into 390's as fast as Fomoco could turn them out. Many still under warranty.
Edit: Don't slay me for that line. I didn't say Fomoco built them for that long, But that I did.
There never was any smog laws enforced around here. Still isn't.
Than came the 351M/400. What a smog dog that was. Wasn't much that could be done for them until the after market parts became available. And that took a long time.
