Add fuel, and when that is out add more, and when that is out add more!! LOL!
I don't really think you can add one or two things to really make it any more bullet proof. Adding excessories on the other hand make it more fun to drive.
That said I do believe in regular preventative maint, and when you hear or feel something not right get it taken care of right away. Nothing like procrastinating and having the failing part take something else out while it has been out for far too long. Take for instance squeaking brakes, and instead of looking at and fixing what ever at a minimal cost like say caliper slide pins sticking, we tend to wait for a few weeks until the frozen pins take out the calipers, pads and rotors. But that is with every vehicle and not just the X.
I have armored a boat before with 1/4" steel and lexan but never a X.
Honestly now days I would use kevlar though because it is lighter and easier to install into doors and tight places. The thickness of the kevlar and lexan will depend on how big of bullet you want to stop.
Personally I think one of the most overlooked things is monitoring! Gauges! If you dont know what is going on with your motor and tranny, there is not point in any other mod.
I think a 5 micron bypass oil filter with modestly extended change intervals and rust prevention strategies are the best long term keeping them going things we can do to our beasts. When I lived up north I sprayed the underbody regularly with TC-11 and the next mod I want is the bypass.
I have only heard of 1 serious problem affecting the V-10 Excursions, and that's
spitting out spark plugs. But this was fixed in late 2002 or early 2003?
The only other problem that seems to pop up often on V-10s (and diesels too) is the worn wiring in the steering column. Take the cover off your steering column and inspect the wiring well. Once the plastic covering on the wiring wears away and the wires touch metal, it causes all sorts of shorts and problems. It can set your Excursion on fire in short order too. A girl lost her Excursion this past summer here locally to a fire suspected to have started in the steering column.
