My local Ford Dealership is selling a 2002 F-350 CC LB Dually with a 7.3 that has 104k miles. They are wanting $23,991 for it. I know this is very high priced, and am going to try to talk them down a few thousand. I also live close to the "rich" parts of Indiana (Carmel, Geist/Fishers) being the reason it is high priced, and I was wondering what peoples input for a reasonable amount would be.
I paid under $21K for my 2003 6.0L auto 4X4 Centennial Edition Lariat crew cab dually fully loaded with 80,000 miles a year and a half ago. $24K is WAY too high, especially with 104K miles. I would put out somewhere in the mid teens at best. Good luck!
I wouldn't pay anything close to that. In the last year or so it seems the 7.3l's reputation has gotten out to the masses. Their prices have sky rocketed. I was looking for a truck last year and you could find nice 7.3l's with around 150k for below $15k all over the place. Now they want $15-28k for similar trucks.
If they don't budge walk away. The 6.0l isn't nearly as bad as it's reputation, and you can buy a lot of parts for those extra $thousands$.
Gees. I know mine isnt a diesel But I paid $14900 for my 2003 F250 super duty with 5.4L auto and power everything. It was even lifted with big tires and wheels. Best part is it only has 58,800 miles on it. He seem very high. There was a 2004 on the lot just like mine but without the lift with a 7.3 diesel and he was asking $17,200 but it only had 81K on the odo
From the looks of the auction, that truck does not even have any bells and whistles. No 4X4, no leather, no CD changer, no auto... just about everything listed is standard equipment such as cupholders, vanity mirror, four wheel disc brakes, etc. Walk away dude, walk away.
If the location is what is getting you, search elsewhere in Indiana. There are a lot of places within a couple of hours that would make it worth the drive, saving you literally thousands! That sounds like it is about $10K more than what it is worth!
It seems like everyone around here gold plated their 7.3s too. I saw more than one with over 150k miles that people were asking 22k or higher. Not even dealers. Private parties were asking that. I emailed one guy and offered him $200 just to mess with him cause his ad said "I know it's high, but they're not making any more of them."
I love my 7.3, but thats ridiculous. the internet is my best friend. I can buy an amtrak ticket for 50 bucks and go cross country. I refuse to pay that kind of cash for a truck. Shop around, there are good deals. An hour drive is cheap to save a few grand.
Do a search on edmunds.com and see what they say. For the money that they want for that 2002, you could get a 2011 F-150 Xl 4x2 with a V-8. Not that a superduty owner would want that.....just sayin'.

Tim makes a good point.
And the F150 would have 110 HP more than the old PSD!
On edit:
There's a local used car dealer in town that had a 2002 Excursion Limited 7.3L truck with all the options and 109K miles. They wanted $19,500 for it, and couldn't take any less because they paid too much for it at auction. It sat there for nearly 6 months before being sold...

Its very much loaded. 4x4 lariat, 6 disc changer, info center on the roof, bed height tool box, 5ver hitch, auto everything. but even for all that, its still about $9k too high

while that is true, and i would very much like the power, i need the durability of the diesel and the tow rating of the 1-ton for my plow. I know some of you would be turning your heads in confusion, but i have a Curtis SnoPro 3000 Snow plow. i know it doesnt weight 3k lbs like the name says (almost seems like it) but it sags my 2003 2500 LB7 DMax 4+" when i lift it off the ground. the plow weights damn near 1k lbs and my LB7 struggles but tries. the LB7 has 355k miles on it and is most likely on its last season for plowing.
I also thought of a deal to work out with the dealership: When it snows, i will plow for $30/hour since the landscaping company they currently pay probably makes $45+/hour
