Why do you need the diesel? Do you tow a lot, or is it just preference? V10s make great plow trucks!
a couple things, the weight of the plow, a gas would just give up after a couple years; and fuel usage. the first time i ever plowed, i did from 3a.m. to 11a.m. and used 7 gallons. thats 0.9gal/hour. one guy that uses a gas, literally the one guy that uses a gas truck used 13gallons the same 7 hours that i did. also, i prefer the fuel economy of the diesel and torque, not necessarily for much towing, maybe a couple times for my Boy Scout troop, but other than that just preference
I also thought of a deal to work out with the dealership: When it snows, i will plow for $30/hour since the landscaping company they currently pay probably makes $45+/hour[/quote]
WHAT??? 35-45 an hour for plowing.. Anything under $120 and you are wasting your time. I almost use that much in gas..I make $150 hr in poor ville where I live..or did I miss something?
here in connecticut there is a HUGE difference in price depending on the dealer location .
on the platinum coast where the world thinks everybody is a gazillionare a local dealer had an 2002 f250 xlt lariat cc 4x4 5.4 70,000mile for $35,000. i drove an hour north and found the exact same truck with 50,000 miles for $24,000 . i told the dealer $19,000. out the door tax and all . plunked down $10,000. (this was in 2005 and i had just sold my house ) cash and drove away .

Well, you did miss something. I live in Indiana, you live in Vermont. One landscaping company i contract plow for charges $45/hour and $120 is way to unreasonable. Sorry but the people that live around me may be rich, but they aren't THAT rich!
I say start making offers you think are reasonable. Offer them $15k and see what they say. If not, walk away to the next one you find.
I told the Sales Rep. it wasn't worth but $15-$16k and he said that the lowest they would go would be $20k. Needless to say, I did walk away. He also told me that my current truck was only worth $5500 retail. I know its a P.O.S. Chevy DuraCrap with 355K miles, but why is it only worth $5k when this Ford is "worth" almost $24k?? He called me back later that day after I told him that it was worth MUCH more than that... He said I was right . Just because I'm 19 (yes just 19) doesn't mean that I'm a dumb@$$. Quit profiling ALL the young people as being stupid, especially when they know more about the truck than you do!!!!
I asked a guy at a dealership 20 miles north in Tipton, IN and he said they would list it starting at $20k. But then he proceeded to tell me that they had sold a 2001 CC LB Dually Diesel with 217k miles for $17,200 a few weeks before.
Just a tip from a very experienced man in this department, but next time be sure to negotiate the price of the truck to an agreed number before you even tell them that you have a trade in. Trust me, it will make a difference.

You took the words right off of my fingertips sir. You trade a secondary transaction, the dealer will low ball a trade anyway if he can get away with it.
