As a newbie, I will say one thing I always do is read (most of) the stickies before joining. Some of em are just to dang long! 40 pages of sticky...thats a lot of reading. Not only do stickies set the tone of the overall experiance, but it lets you in on the overall attitude of the board, the rules, and who is a moderator.

As far as the stickies being slightly hidden as it were, I suppose I liked it before...but either way they are still available which is the important thing.

I too am prone to breaking rules...or more forgetting which rules I should not break!
