My motor is knocking 83 4.9 I can only hear it at idle but cant hear very well in the first place. Huh am looking for some suggestions as to what it could possibly be. it runs good and theres no smoke. Just changed the oil today and put a quart of marvel in it. i was hoping that might fix it but, no go. Its a little concerning and I am almost scared to drive it as I can't afford a major repair right now. Any ideas are welcome and thanks.
P.S. The sound quality is not the best(using camera on phone) but the knock is definitely audible, even for me the deaf guy.
Hard to tell from the video, but can you tell what area its coming from.. top, bottom or front of the engine? Kinda sounds like valvetrain but like I said, its really hard to hear. A rod will usually be heard when you rev the engine more than at idle.
Mine does that, so does my friend's f250. it's probably a rod knock. i am doing an engine swap, my friend parked his and put his diesel on the road. anyway, it is probably bad and expensive. pull your valve cover and adjust your valves, but it really sounds like the 300 six death knock.
Yes it does speed up but quiets down a little so its hard for me to here it when I am in the cab. I have pinpointed it to the bottom of the motor with a stethoscope(long vacuum cleaner extension) and its mid front half of the engine it sounds like. From all I have gathered...maybe a rod bearing? Which brings me to the question can you replace them from underneath without having to pull the motor and I know you should replace them all but really can't afford another set so would it be ok to replace the worn ones for now until the funds are flowing better?
Thanks for the imput guys really hoping its not the death knock
The other day, my ride did that after the ride home from a fresh oil change. Only did it for a couple seconds at startup then went away, haven't heard it since. Oil level is good. I don't think it's anything to worry about, but I appreciate any thoughts.
If it went away I don't think i would stress it. I wasn't going to stress mine either if the oil change had helped it. Naturally after an oil change on initial start you may have a little noise as the filter fills and lube cycles through the engine.
You can pull plug wires to kill cylinders one at a time, a lower end knock should change in sound or go away when you kill that cylinder. Also, look closely at the oil for tiny specs of shiny "glitter". Loose torque converter bolts can also sound like a rod knock.
So I pulled the wires and there is no difference that I can tell. Guess I am going to have to bite the bullet and pull the oil pan, which really sucks cause I just changed the oil again. Maybe do the seafoam trick before I do it so I can just change the oil as you are supposed to anyway.
