the truck is an 86 f250 HD with a 351w. has dual tanks. i put a new carb on it over a month ago, along with a new fuel pump (manual).
the truck ran for a little while than the fuel slowly stopped pumping in. i thought is was a clogged fuel line, cuz the truck sat for a long time before i bought it. i blew out the line with an air compressor. i could hear the air going into the tank so i figured i got the clog out.
well, it still doesnt pump fuel. i know the pump is work. could it possibly be the sending unit in the tank? maybe the selector box thing on the frame rail under the cab? im about to buy all new fuel line, sending units and the switch box thing...
anyone have any advice or trouble shooting? im not looking forward to spending all the money to replace it all... thank you!
If it has been sitting I would first go get a clear inline fuel filter from your local part store about 3 or 4 bucks and install it before the pump. Then if your tank is not to far from empty I would throw just a couple of gallons in it and drive it on a bumpy path for a few. then pop the hood and look at the filter you put on if it is full of rust then thats your problem, and I expect that it is. If it turns out to be you can either pull the tank(real fun)and try to clean it or better, if you have the money get a new tank and while you are in there you get to see what shape the sending unit is in.
I just went through this with my 83 f150 and it was a bear but it was well worth it. I hope that your new carb isn't getting all that trash in it if that is your problem.
Here is a pic of the filters I used I have put two of them in to catch what I couldn't clean out of the tank(couldn't afford a new tank). Hope it helps.
i do have the clear fuel filter on it before the carb. i know its not cloged from the tank selector thing to the carb. and i blew the lines from the selector box to the tanks. still not getting fuel... i just looked at the price for the tank selector box thing, its about 150 bucks, the sending units are arounf 100 and the tanks are between 120 to 200 bucks... thanks alot of money im not really wanting to spend but i might have to. i need to get this truck runnign cuz my mustang just shot out another spark plug from the head yesterday... pretty pissed about that!
yea, i feel suction from the pump on the hose that comes out of the tank selector box. i think i should replace that tank switch box thing... but i dont think there are any holes in the line, it worked fine than just slowly stopped pumping fuel. thats why i thought it might have been clogged...
I think if it were me i would rig up a long fuel line from the pump and put it in a plastic gas tank to be Damn sure that the pump to the garb was working. Then if all is good you have at least eliminated everything but the selector, the sending unit, and the tanks.
lol, sounds fun... anyhthing i need to buy in order to do this job? would it be wise to replace the sending unit while im in there??? any other suggestions?
