Hi guys - I have a difficult question to answer because it has to do with a noise, and how do you go about describing a noise?? Anyway, here goes...best I can do is to say that it sounds like rolling a rock around in a plastic bucket. It's not engine-related, or transmission. I think it might be a u-joint, or, hopefully not, the transfer case. The noise is slightly there with the hubs locked, 2WD, but gets louder when engaged in 4WD. It increases in volume and sound with acceleration, but is hardly noticable when coasting (no noise at all when it's not moving, so it's not the engine). From inside the cab it sounds like it's coming from roughly underneath the passenger seat somewhere. Any thoughts???
well you are on the right track. Hva eyou got under your truck and looked around? Did you notice any areas where oil appeared to be flying/flinging? in the u-joint area... did you look at the front end? just to throw it out there, did you check all your body mount bolts?

Hey - thanks for the quick response. I haven't had a chance to look underneath - kind of hard here - lots of snow, and I don't have a garage, but it's a good idea. I'll see what I can do. As far as body mounts go, I don't think it's body/frame related because the noise relates directly in proportion to the wheel speed, and it's louder in 4WD than 2WD.
Check your u-joints first... When was the last time you put some fresh grease in them? If you look at the pics in my random folder you'll see what a really worn out U-joint looks like... My buddy didn't ever give his grease!

Put grease in then not too long ago, but not all are greaseable (is that a word??). I'll try to borrow a buddies garage and do an inspect on the joints. I really hope that's the problem, and not the transfer case!
